DEATH OF DR POLLEN
Dr Henry Pollen, one of the besli known members of the.medical in Wellington, passed away on Saturday at his residence in Boulcott street, aged '■ «5. The late Dr Pollen- was born at Kingston, Co. Dublin, Ireland, in 1553. He was educated there and at the Eathmines School and: at Middleton College, Co. Cork. He studied medicine at Trinity College, Dublin, where he obtained the B.A. and M.B. degrees in 1874, and the following year the M.Ch. Tho same year (1875) Dr Pollen was appointed assistant'surgeon to tho Blaenavon Irou Wdfks 'in''Monmouthshire. After- nine . months there he accepted ' the position' of surgeon superintendent to the New ' Zealand Government Emigration Department, and he came out to this Dominion in the ship Hudson in charge of between three and four hundred emigrants. In 1876 Dr Poilen settled in Uisborne, where, ho practised his profession for 14 years. During his stay ! in Gisborne the local hospital was started under his supervision, and he cout tinued to bo surgeon-in-charge until leaving the district. He also acted as medical officer to the various friendly societies. In 1891), having been appointed surgeon to the Antipodean Lodge of Oddfeliows, he removed to Wellington, where ho commenced the practice of his profession. Dr Pollen was medical re. feree to the Australian- Mutual Provident Society and to the New Zealand Government Life Insurance Department. He acted for the Manchester Vlnity and American Orders of Oddfeliows, for the foresters and for the female i'orosters, and was one of the physicians of the Wellington Hospital. In 1885 Dr Pollen went Home for a trip, and during his stay he obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine at Trinity College. Tho late Dr Pollen was Port Health Officer tit Wellington for many yea-re, and was a member of the Military Pensions Board. A few days ago ho contracted influenza probably as a result of his official duties; pleurisy supervened, and caused his death. He leaves two daughters by his first marriage; his seconQ wife died some years ago. He was a nephew of tho late Hon. Dr Pollen, and was closely associated for many years with the work of St. Peter's . parish. Dr Pollen was a man of charming personality and won the respect of all woe know him.
