FIXTURES. October 24, 25—Poverty Bay Turf Club. October 26, 2S— Wellington Racing Club. November 2, 6—Avondale. Jockey Club. November 4. 6, 9— Canterbury Jockey Club, Cup Meeting. November 9—Auckland Racing Club. November 30—Taka»?una Jockey Club. December 26, 27—ilanawatu Racing Out December 26, 2S, January I—Auckland Racing Club. December 27, 30. January 2—Auckland Trotting Club. ' fiOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Tominga."> Battle Song (Signor—Armistice), who is owned bv Dr Newman, M.P for 'Wellington East (racing in the name of P. Soames) rau a great race in the Masterton Cup. The gelding is a five-year-old bv Signor from Armistice, and is engaged in the- chief event at tho forthcoming meeting at Trentham. Sea Queen, who won so many races about the district a few years ago, foaled a eolt. to Boniform. She will not be mated this year. It is reported that the fact of J. W. Lowe beine ill at Masterton resulted in all the horses under his charge being scratched for the second day at Masterton. The reason advanced may or may not bo tho key to the position. Piqu9 may have had something to do with it. as soniii of the owners do not [ike being carpeted, no matter what the catiso is.

Chakwana has foaled a colt to Kilbroney. Mr H. Mi Speed, who has been a racing enthusiast for many years, has returned from tho front. Ho had a great reception at Auckland.

S-edd-el-Bahr and Roval Star have arrived at Trentham.

Good accounts are. to hand of Gloaming, who has been at Trentham since his arrival from Australia. . He will assuredly be in tho boom 'when ho strips.

The penultimate payment for the New Zealand Cup has proved to bo entirely satisfactory, and most, if not all, of the best horses still remain in the handicap. With such performers as Client (who put up such a great run at Masterton). Menelaus (last year's winner), Sasanof Ithe last Melbourne Cup winner), Volo. Snub. Depredation, Rorke's Drift and the others, the Grand Prix of New Zealand cannot help being a success. There arc twen-ty-two horses still in the race, and it is quite likelv that at least twenty will go to the post.

The Stewards' Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting has an extraordinary acceptance, no fewer than thirty horses appearing on the list. Most of the best sprintem in the country remain in. x\fter the Masterton meeting punters should be able to form a fairly good opinion from the Wellington peri Formances. although one is apt to be ' led astray by looking too long at a. horse and his performances. It is curious how rumours about horses get around. A dav or two before the Caulfiold Cun was run it was announced that the favourite for the race. King Offa. was amiss, but tho imported horso duly turned up as the wimier. The public are beginning to wake up to this particular form of camouflage, but unfortunately a small section is alwavs influenced, which, probably, accounts for the perpetuation of the rumours.

It is a certainty that among racTng men no death in latter veara will; be more genuinely regretted than that of "Pat"' Jones. A typical Irishman, "Pat" was most popular, and ho will be greatly missed at Ellerslie, whore his good humour and good-natured arguments helped to pass away many a pleasant hour, after the morning's work was over. Deceased started his profession in the VVaikato. where he had a number of good horses under his control, taking tip his residence at Ellerslie about fifteen years ago, the mainstay of his stable being the wellknown performer Borneo. A most painstaking, man with horses, he soon had plenty of patrons, and will long be remembered as trainer of EH Gallo, Bedford; Colooal Soult and other notable horses. His for the thoroughbred was typical of his nationality, and his last thoughts were for the welfare of the horsss under his care. On Sunday afternoon, John Thorpe, who was kindly superintending the working of his friend's team, called in to see him, and, though only semi-conscious, "Pat's" one query was as to "how the horses were feeding." and then he went off into a sleep from which he never wakened. Honest to his employers, and a friend to everybody. "Pat" Jones will be remembered and his memory re.snected by all who «amo in contact with him. GORE ACCEPTANCES Press Association GORE.
