CHESS

Although tie chess editor has made good progress during the past /'vee* is not yet able to leave tie Wellington Hospital. He is most anxious to resume the publishing of problems, games, end games, etc., as soon as possible. Meanwhile tie following notes of last week’s doings in local ciess circles are publisied:— . „ „ Tie prize-list of the Wellington Chess Club’s 1918 "Petherick” tourney, cap) is now available, tie position of tie loaders being as follows: — ■ To

It will be seen that the first prize is very handsomelv won by Davis, _the second bv S. Mackay, and the third by E. S. Taylor (who came first last year). In scoring a "possible" Davies has put up a record for a ''Petherick ' contest. The winner's of the-various -< Petherick' tourneys are as follow-:—1903, C. W. Tanner; 1904, R. J. Barnes; 1905, A. W. Gyles (the well-known Congress player who is at present doing ambulance work in the Balkan area); 1906, E. J. Barnes; 1907, H. Jessup (now a prominent Wa. nganui tohessist);. 1908, R. J. Baimes; 1909, W. B. Mason; 1910. R. J. Barnes; 1911. A. Gyles (father of the 1905 winner); 1912, E. J. Barnes; 1913, W. Cowper Hill (who was killed in France in September, 1916); 1914, W. C, White (Petone); 1915, no contest; 1916.« W. C. White • (Petone); 1917, E. S. Taylor; and 1918. A. W. 0. Davies. It will- be seen that Mr Barnes, the club champion, has won five of these tourneys, and that these successes were all gained in the even-numbered .years. "liuck in odd numbers" has clearly not been his experience in this annual contest. By bis 1903 win Mr Baxnes won the "Petherick No. I'' trophy (a. handsome shield). The Petherick No. 2 trophy cannot be won outright. The onlv condition imposed by the late Mr.E. W. Petherick (for many years the club's president-, and a very liberal supporter of the same) was that the annual contest for his trophy should bo a handicap tourney. .. -. l_ Owing to the prevalence of influenza slower progress than usual was made last week in the club's current championship tourney. The results were as follow: —Ward drew with James, Rolling drew, with Davies,- Mason won from Still (through the latter not being consent with a draw), and S. Gyles won from W. Mackay. James is a passod pawn to the good in an unfinished gamo v. Clark. Mason has now completed his fixtures with -the good tally of fourteen wins and one loss <tp Davies). Davies has scored twelve ■ wins and- two draws, and ho can, therefore, tie with Mason, tq do which he will require to score a win from Barnes. Barnes, who has been laid aside by influenza during the past fortnight, comos next with 7J- wins and 1\ losses. Members had much pleasure last week in extending a "welcome home" to Mr E. H. Severne, who had been champion of the Canterbury Club for several seasons, When he enlisted two years ago. Mr Severne, who has been invalided home from France, goes south to-day, oh route for the Hanmer Convalescent Home. - The Ngaio Chess Club has elected Mr H. Prinoo as.its hon. secretary, in place of Mr J. A. Glasgow, who ,went into camp on Wednesday carrying with him the best wishes of local chessists. Messrs Welton and Harper have tied for the second prize in the South Wellington Club's annual handicap tourney. They are to play off at an early dato. A committee meeting was held on Thursday . evening to make arrangements in connection with next week's visit from the Wairarapa chess team, which, according to latest advices, will consist of about sixteen playors. A most enjoyable two-round match is being looked forward to by both clubs.
