"Outcast.” in ‘‘Outcast,” the author invites us to consider Ihe plight of Geoffrey Sherwood, a young business man, steadily travelling downhill because his first love, Valentine, has jilted -him for a wealthy baronet. He is, however, brought to realise there are thousands whose lot is infinitely more miserable than his by the optimistic outlook upon life of Miriam, a woman of the streets, whoso life story is on all fours with his own. Learn ing that she is penniless and without a roof to shelter her, Geoffrey is moved to offer her "his protection, and three months later the effect of the relationship I hat lias sprung from this chance meeting is shown in the rehabilitation of Geoffrey with-the woman whose devotion.-is nothing hut n good influence. Meanwhile the disillusioned Valentine has left her husband, and seeks an interview with her erstwhile sweetheart. Miriam realises that his passion for her is unabated, and terrified it may involve her abandonment. angrily insists that Geoffrey shall not see her: here is an agonising scene of renunciation. Geoffrey, careless of the* girl’s wistful desire to win Ids own affection, decides that if ho is to remain his own master he must see no more of Miriam. Finally Valentine sees her duty plainly and returns to tho baronet. Geoffrey, distracted, is led to nereeive that, he has no right to desert the woman in whose life he me'ns so much, and offers marriage to .Miriam, which sh" refuses. The story is told in a human and entirely ; r ■ : -.p manner, the part of Miriam giving Mica 'MacDonell many superb opportunities for much fine acting.
