At Otaki the mare was most docile, and but for the fact that she happened to turn half round just as the tapes were released would have got away with the others. However, she did not lose a great deal of ground. ' George Price, the late president of the Highden stables, returned to New Zealand on the hospital ship, which reached port on Monday. “Stump” looks as though he were going to take on the pigskin again. He must have disposed of 'nearly two stone since, he left these peaceful shores. As soon as leave was given Price made haste to Palmerston to see his mother, who has not: been enjoying the host of health of late. Form Tip was made a good favourit’for the Memorial Stakes at Otaki. He carried over JJIOO more than the secoo. favourite. Devotion, but ho failed _tr justify one farthing’s worth of the investments; in fact he ran .like an Angora throughout the piece. ■ A very hoavv stunt pervailed the atmosphere at Otaki on Monday. The phenomenon was one of those old tale 1 that used to do the rounds some years ago. On this occasion it was “Hector Gray’s double.” People who ard usually calm and collected, were wildly prancing the course to find out if anyone knew ■anything about “Gray’s double.” How ‘on earth these silly things start, who launches them on the public, is somewhat obscure, but a shrewd guesser might pick it. However, "Hector Gray s doable” did not anyway near come oft. People who listen to and quote those foolish things should not be allowed on -racecourses without attendant*. Kipling was a very expensive horse for his new owner, Mr J, Q* Collins, the sum paid for the oolt being .£IOOO. All manner of stories are abroad concerning the transaction, the most popular one beimr that when the head of the stable was approached abont the sale of *the colt the reply was -£IOOO the intension being to frighten the would-be purchaser off. However, on this occasion the money was forthcoming at once, anf the camouflage stunt failed. It was a wonder Mr Collins elected to start t^ r youngster at Otaki, after the hearing he had cot from the touts. The stake he won was but *6BO net, and he has exposed his form. It would have been a .far better proposition for his owner to have kept him for a classical event v ith .some stake attached to it. Kipling is a magnificent specimen of a horse. He ip beautifully moulded, has a fine barrel and ereat _ quarters, and in the fore-parr he would he hard to match. He is a chestnut like most of the Demosthenes* horses, and he should, on present dny appearances make his name on the turf.

, The imported filly Bonny Briar ran a very good race in the Maiden Plate ar 'Otaki. She had no chance of footing it with the winner. Kipling, hnt. although she had to he content with third place she appeared to muster up quite as much pace as most of the others concerned. More should be heard of her in the future. , .

Fcf'inan was made first favourite for -the Steeplechase at the Otaki meeting, but ho failed to cheer his supporters up after half the journey had been covered. .After his abortive defeat of Gaekwar n fortnight ago it was considered by the wiseacres that'he must beat the Ghoorka gelding, but oh Foeman’s running at Otaki it is highly probable that Gaekwar would have accounted for him had a disaster not overtaken Gaekwar. The death is recorded from Hawera cf Mr G. H. Gibson, who has been actively Identified with the turf for very many years. In his time he had many of the best on the West Coast of the North Island, and latterly he owned Coronetted. Henry Clay, and Dingle. His demise removes another of the old established sports from the sphere of racing activity, which he helped to build up in the davs when conditions were extremely adverse, and monetary remuneration extremely meagre.
