.'- ■ "— — PROCEEDINGS AT CONFERENCE. ! Prea Association. CHRISTCHURCH, September 23. \ At the Education Conference, Dr Chilton (Professorial Board) presented a paper on "The Modem "University," dealing briefly with the history of university institutions. With reference to teaching methods, he suggested that lectures should' be typewritten, duplicated, and distributed to students beforehand, so that the lecture hour could be devoted to answers to questions and explaining difficulties. In the discussion which followed, it was stated that small staffing militated not only against research work, but against extension classes. Tho conference resolved that the Government be asked to give a grant to university colleges to put Workers' Educational Associations' tutorial classes on a more satisfactory basis; that the department be asked to institute a Dominion grading scheme for all manual instructors, so that they be paid in the same manner as teachers of primary school*.
