A COMPLEX PROBLEM
ASSISTING SOLDIERS IN BUSINESS. IMPORTANT ACTION BY WAR RELIEF ASSOCIATION. A matter that haß occasioned thf War Relief Association much seripui thcbght was. discussed at some length in committee yesterday. Prior to ihe meeting going into committee the chairman (Mr L. O. H. Tripp) said that the question of grants to soldiers desiious of earning a, livelihood had caused a good deal of trouble. He explained that the association had been advancing money—sometimes half the amount required—to returned soldiers going on the .land,., hut ,thej question of assistance to men going, into business constituted a most difficult. problem.
After a full discussion,the following motion, proposed by Mr' J: Hutcheson at the meeting of the applications- committee, was approved :—"That owing,to the increasing number of applications | for loans from returned Boldiers desirous of settling on the land, and the obvious difficultv of aiding applicants desirous of financial assistance to establish themselves in' other walkß in life, the applications committee desire the iehdorsement of the executive committee of the War Relief Association, of Wellington, to their recommendation that no more loans of a'like nature ; . granted atleastui-fcilsucH'jtime a's'^a,"^'! general scheme something like uniform treatment to rbe ' accorded• *to ' all classes of appli- .. . wants':" ■•■■■><•>«— ■! ■■•■_.- ■ ► , I It'was'decided that the chairman 1 should arrange a deportation to wait on the Acting-Prime Minister.
