CAMP NOTES

TEMPORARY 'APPOINTMENTS.

The following temporary appointments have ibeen approved of by the'l reutham Camp Commandant (Colonel H. R. hotter, C.M.G.):— _ m Engineers' Reinforcement.—Sappers i. C. Lawson, G. G.-Lewis, N• E. Stone to be lance-corporals; Lance-Corporals G. A. Gow, R. T. Jaggard, W. P. Martin, J. Gardiner to bo corporals. Special Training Class.—Corporal W. S. M. Morrin to be sergeant. B Company, 47th Reinforcement. Corporal H. Muir to be sergeant. C Company, 4Sth Reinforcement. — Private A. L. Bayliss to bo orderly-room clbrk. Special Training Class. —Corporal S. H. J. B. Eaton to be sergeant. E Company, 46th Reinforcement. —Coi> poral E. Wilson to be sergeant. B Company, 46th Reinforcement.— Privates H. V. Caverhiil, E. Williams? W. Jockstone to be lance-corporals; Corporals W. Edge. G. R. A. MeElwain to be sergeants. From A Company, 43rd Reinforcement nine men have qualified as marksmen by obtaining the prescribed number of marks. Corporal A. S. Turnbull gained the highest score. Twenty-seven men from B Company, 43rd Reinforcement, gained the marksmen badge, Lance-Corporal G. W. Knox securing the highest number of marks in his company. FEATHEESTON. The Camp Commandant (Colonel N. P. Adams, C.M.G.,) has approved of the following temporary appoiniments Private T: Hungerford of the 47th Specialist Company, to be corporal. /■ Staff Nurse Ray -has been transferred from Peatherston Military Hospital to Trentham Camp for duty. Sergeant C. A. Berendscn, of the 48 th Specialists,- has been ■ transferred to the 43rd Specialises- (left -wing). Second-Lieutenant A. E. Clinkard, of A Company, 44ths, has been transferred to A Company of the 45ths. Quartermaster-Sergeant E. McKeich, of D Company, 46ths, has been transferred to Base Records for discharge. Staff-Sergeant J. Campbell, of the Dental Corps, has been granted sick leave. In future a town picquet under one officer, will parade at Masteftou and Carterton on the nights when troops are on leave in those towns. Cabled advice was received by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, yesterday, of the death of Air H. J. Gibbs, who has been a director of the company in London for about twenty-four years. Air Gibbs, who had reached an advanced age. was in New Zealand many years ago, a member of the firm of Cargill, Gibbs and Company, in tho south. Private Harold Phillips, who has died of wounds, was the third son of Air W. H. Phillips, of Sherry River. Ho was wounded severely in the back on August 2oth, and died in tho Wal-ton-on-Thames Hospital on September 16th. Ho was wounded previously in July, 1917, and after eight months in hospital and on leave,’ was sent back to France in April, 1918, and he was in the trenches from the beginning of May until he was wounded. The late Private Phillips was at Nelson College for three years, -during which time ho took a prominent part in athletics, being a fine cricketer and footballer. He also won the Senior Cup. After leaving college he entered the Customs in AVellington, afterwards being transferred to Greymouth, whore lie remained for six years. Ho enlisted from Sherry River early in 1916, and lelt New Zealand with the 12th Reinforcement. Ho was very popular everywhere, and has left many friends. During his last year at college he passed the Junior Civil Service examination, and while in Wellington studied at Victoria College.
