The doartn of Justices of tho Peace in Otaki is severely felt, ana mis meiu.ng the court had to be adjourned for nearly two hours to secure J.P/s. Counsel were not well pleased with the delay, especially as the weatner was cold, auu the business to be transacted of a very brief nature; Two civil cases wore awarded by default, viz.. A. J. Hulmo v. H. Sevan, claim £& and costs Ida, and T. P. Dunne v. liens Whata, claim Tti 7s Bd. costs 28s 6d. The syren, secured by tho Otaki Volunteer lire Brigade, was tried yesterday. but does not promise to be of much use to residents living beyond a radius of half a mile. As tho result of a dance, organised by tho natives of Otaki. to provide fundsfor entertaining visitors, on Thursday night, tho sum of over T2O was cleared. A plain and fancy dress dunce, on a largo scale, will be held next week to raise funds for the “Copper Trail/’ Mrs (Dr.i Huthwaito is Hod. secretary. The Bov. Father Do>ro. who recently died in Auckland, was buried at Foxton yesterday. The assemblage wm a largo one. At tho sitting of the Appeal Board at Palmerston on Wednesday X*n Griffiths (returned soldier) was granted tw<. months’ leave of absence to wind nn his father’s estate. The appeal of Charles S. Eagle of To Boro, was dismissed, there being no appearance of appellant*
