THIRTY-TWO APPEALS HEARD

BY FIRST "WELLINGTON BOARD. Some 33 cases were down for hearing yesterday by the First Wellington Military Service Board—Messrs D. G\ A. Cooper, S.M. (chairman), D. McLaren, and W. Perry. LOSS BY FIRE.

The appeal of Francis Wm. Martin (bootmaker, Levin) came Up for rehearing. Mr C. P. O'Donnell. appeared tor the appellant, who stated that he had three brothers at the front, and one in 'New Zealand, over military age. By a fire on May 19th last he had lost .£2OOO I and odd worth of stock, insured for i J 31300, and his total loss was over Jf-600. He asked for three or four months leave i from the CI Camp to enable him. to start I the business again. After that he would be able to leave it in charge of his wife, | who had had previous experience. Tha case was dismissed, with leave till tho .September Cl draft. HATTERS' APPEALS.

Mr O. C. Mazengarb appeared in support of the adjourned appeals of Jaraea Joseph Fox (foreman hatter, Wellington) and Stanley Midgley (hat-maker, Wellington), and their employers, which had been referred to the National Efficiency Board. In tho case of Fox, the board adhered to its former decision, of March 4th last, to grant indefinite exemption. The employers' appeal on behalf of Midgley was dismissed. The reservist siated that ho was the sole support of hi« widowed mother and of a sister aged nine. Decision was reserved. A MOTHER'S APPEAL.

The mother of Norman George Johnson (grocer, Wellington) appealed for the exemption of the reservist, on the ground that his father, aged G 4, was very ill and she had two other sons and a son-in-la.v at the front. Mrs liowden, employer of the reservist, also appealed, asking for time to enable her to adjust her affairs. Tho case was adjourned till tho next Wellington sittings of tho board. SALVATION ARMY OFFICER EXEMPTED.

The appeal of Wm. Leonard Fanthaui (Salvation Army officer, aged 41, of Auckland) was reheard, Mr Evans appearing for the reservist. Counsel etatcd that in Septeinbei last, the appellant, who vas a reiJbgnised minister, had withdrawn his appoal on the ground that, being a Binglo man, he should go to the front boforo the married men. Now, however, owing to the large number of Salvation Army officers who had gone into camp, he wished the appeal to be reinstated and exemption allowed. Indefinite exemption was granted. HARBOUR MASTER! EXEMPTED.

Captain Mclndoo (secretary of tho Merchant Service Guild) appealed, on the ground of public interest, in respect of Captain Wm. Gordon, who stated that ■since March, 1917, ho had been harbourmaster, pilot, and officer in chargo of Customs at Picton. Prior to that ho had been 'at soa sinco 1900. He had applied for admission into tho Motor Patrol .Sorvico but' did not succeed. Indefinite exemption was allowed. Mr H. Buddie appeared on behalf of the appellant. CBMISTAEtELPHiIAN APPEALS. Mr J. N. Troupe (managing brother of tho Christadelphian meeting, Wellington) appealed in respect of Ernest Georgo Daniel (butcher's assistant, Riverton), Edwin Henry Hill (farmer, Riverton), and Thomas Boddington (grocer, Christchnrch), all of whom he stated were members of tho Ghristadelphian body, and had been members before thi war. The appeals wore allowed. BEE AND BOY KEEPER.

The appeal of Walter Ifesseltine, aged 13 (beo farmer and manner of the Anglican Boys' Homo, Levin), which had been indefinitely adjourned, came up for review. Mr J. A. Tripe appeared i'or tlho committee of tko Boys' Homo, who also appealed. Hesseltino stated that lias wife assisted in the management of fcho homo, but no woman and no old couple could, manage the homo by fchemselvee. The boys were "little rips, to say the least of it. (Laughter.) The homo admitted boys, irrespectiveot creed. The board adhered to their decision of January last—an indefinite exemption. FRIIDNDLY SOCIETIES' CHEMIST. The /secretary of the 'United Friendly Societies' Dispensary appealed for the exemption of Ben. O'Connor, aged 40

(managing chemist, Wellington). The soeiotiea concerned, he state*!, h*id over 5000 members, and, including private prescriptions, the (prescriptions made up averaged over 200 a day. They had advertised iu the four centres for a successor to O'Connor, but had had no suitable replies. The case was adjourned till the next Wellington sittings of tho board to enablo one of ihe applicants for'tho post to be interviewed. Mr Ward appeared for tho appellants. GLAXO AND THE "GLAXO" C-UIP. In the unavoidable absence of Mr C P. Ske-rrctt, K.C., Mr A. J. Gray, K.C., appeared in support of the adjourned appeal of Messrs Nathan and Co., Ltd., m respect of Sydney Jacobs (clerk, Kelburnj. Mi Gray said that Jacobs was indispensable for the manufacture and distribution of Glaxo. The ease had previously been adjourned on condition that Mr Little (.laeobs's understudy) went into camp. Little was due to go into camp—the Ol or "Glaxo" Campnext month. 'Kio c aso was further adjourned till the September (sittings of tho board.

The. board granted indefinite exemption, so long as Mr J. L. Morrison, the reservist's employer, is engaged in Government advisory work. The appeal of Oscar It. Greer, farmer, lava lint, adjourned to enablo him to arrange with one or other of his brothers to take over his farm, came up for further hearing. The appellant stated that he had not been able to arrango the matter.—The board dismissed the appeal, -with leave till September next. Leave till the July draft was granted to George L. Chatwm, chemist, Wellington.

The adjourned appeal of 'William Miller, machinist, Railway workshops. Petono, was dismissed, with leave till the July draft. The appeal of George W. Eaby, clerk to the Wellington Hospital Board, adjourned for family reasons, was further adjourned til! tho August sittings of the board.

Clifford Peel, agent, Northland, stated that he was closing down his business. His assistant had just volunteered, ami he asked for leave till July 16th to enable him to adjust matters.—Tho leave was granted.

Joseph Hugh Jones, warehouseman, Wellington, a voluntary reciuit, due in ramp to-day, asked for a month's leave to go and see his people at. Reeflon.— Leave was granted till July_ 16th. The caso of Walter w. Anderson, driver, Kilbirnie, -who appealed for iamily reasons, was adjourned till the next Wellington sittings of tho board.

Gunner James Henry Carson, of tho 39th. New Zealand Field Artillery, stationed at Featherston, asked for indefinite leave from camp tor family reasons.—Decision was reserved. In the caso of Daniel 1. Larsen. dairy •farmer, Paraparaumu„, tho board confirmed its decision of January 21th lastindefinite exemption. George Gordon Sang, master mariner, Wellington, for whom Mr J. Scott appeared, was exempted indefinitely. John Alexander Main, cleric, Wellington, for whom Mr Evans appeared, was indefinitely exempted for family reasons. A number of appellants failed to appear, and their cases wero dismissed. At 3.50 p.m. the board adjourned till 10 o'clock this morning.
