COMMERCE & MINING

WELLINGTON MARKETS. A wide range of values is ruling in tho local markets for apples, oonsetpuent upon a fairly largo number of different rarities being available, embracing popular descriptions as well as unpopular linos. Dougherty apples of choice quality are soiling very well indeed, with Stunners and Russets closely following them. Cooking descriptions are in strong demand so far as certain varieties are concerned. Dessert pears command good attention, particularly winter Nelis and winter Coles. Now Zealand-grown passions and lemons are realising satisfactory rates, as only small quantities are coming to hand. Poorman oranges are selling particularly well. Arrival of citrous fruits next week are expected to faco a strong market. Small quantities of Hutt tomatoes are meeting a fair outlet. There were indications a little time back of the market for South Island potatoes firming, and this has boon very graphically shown lately by a very heavy advance in values. A shipment of Victorian potatoes arrived last week, but as a higher rate of freight is now being charged they cannot affect to any grea! extent the advance in price shown in the South Island markets. Whether present values will hold for two or three months ahead is problematical, and to a groat extent the position depends or tho damage done by blight. Only small lots of Canterbury onions are now offering, and values are very high. Potatoes, choice -88 ids to .£9 nor ton. prime v£7 10s to A 8; onions, J3lO 10s to All 10s per ton. OTHER VEGETABLES.
