A noticeable feature iu the proceedings of the Waterside Commission at Dunedin (says the "Otago Daily Times") is the inquiries 'made for suggestions in respect to remedying defects complained of. Such suggestions arc often forthcoming. One witness suggested, as an improvement, that experienced tank workers should be appointed as inspectors of ships’ ballast and other .tanks, instead of inspectors of machinery, as at present. This witness had about twelve years’ experience as a tank worker, and gave his reasons .for,-, thinking that a tank worker would bo. q more competent tank inspector than would ah engineer. HUGH GRAIN RELIGHTS. Grain freights are still very high, according to news received from London dialed March 10th. Bates homewards from the Rive Plate were firm, though no ©barters were reported, . Neutrals can obtain 200 a for wheat to United Kingdom, or 203 s to Trance, but a quieter tone was ruling to the United States with rates quotably unchanged at 80 to 22 dollars. Hlgaer figures are indicating from Atlantic-America to Continental ports, and quotations are advanced Is 3d to 2s Gd per quarter, upto 67s 6d being offered to Trenoh-At-lantio, 75s to Marseilles, and 77s 6d to Italy. No change was noted to the United Kingdom, the rate for which remains at 50s. Australia was nominally SOOs for uncontrolled tonnage to United Kingdom, with 110 s for South Africa and 130 s for United States. WALT/SEND AT TARAKOHE. The Glaucus is an iron vessel of 1363 tons gross register and was built at Sunderland in 1878Captain W. R- Reynolds is in command. THE DUNEDIN'S BOILER. There is a feeling amongst certain members of the Otago Harbour Board (says t(ho "Otago Daily Times’’) that Mr Mason (the board's consulting engineer) should have been given an opportunity of submitting a report on the condition of the boiler of the tug Dunedin. Mr Mason, who is now resigning from the position of consulting engineer to the 'board, is a mechanical as well as a civil engineer, and was i,n receipt of a salary of £oCO per year. Some members seem, olso, to have developed a scepticism us to the value of the report of tho committee of inquiry set up by fhornsclvng to go into the history of tho planning, construction, etc., of tho cracked boiler. A view that is frequently expressed by members is that the pressure of 3801 b to the square innb to which the boiler was subjected under |;ho Government test on its trial run laid the foundation of tho weakness which has now become so pronounced ns bo cause film condemnation of tho boiler. Whatever tho ro-

port of the inquiry may elicit, it would appear Mwt if a decision is come to by the board to endeavour to repair tiho damaged boiler in preference to obtaining n now one. the pressure in ft w ju bo £H> restricted by the Government ongineers Mint the usefulness of the Dunodru will bo severely curtailed.
