A conference was held on Friday between members of the Wellington Hospital Board and the Director of Military Hospitals (Colonel T. H. A. Valintine) with reference to extending the provision for military patients at Wellington Hospital. Colonel Valintine had advised the board that accommodation for at least sixty more military patients would be required. He explained that this increase of accommodation’was necessitated by the increasing number of cot cases returning to New Zealand. The proposal was that another building should bo erected within the hospital grounds. In the course of the discussion it was explained that the Victoria Hospital, at present used as a military ward, could scarcely bo interfered with, as it was erected by voluntary contributions for the benefit of chronic invalids. The hoard finally resolved unanimously: “That the Wellington Hospital Board will give every facility to the Government in its proposal to erect a building in its grounds for the accommodation of military patients and nursing staff as required by Dr Valintine, Director of Military Hospitals, and that the cost of such building, with its equipment, bo defrayed by tho Government.” _ The site suggested for the new building is a sunny slope in front of tho Victoria Hospital.

“That this meeting of Wanganui waterside workers, while recognising that discipline must be properly enforced, learn* with regret that some of the prisoners undergoing detention in the Wanganui Military Detention Barracks, have been subjected to allegedly brutal treatment. Tho rumours current concerning this matter are of an alarming nature, and as a representative body of workers, we deem it to bo urgently necessary in the public -interests that a full and impartial public inquiry should be immediately authorised by the responsible Minister.” A copy of this resolution, which was passed at a meeting of the Wanganui Waterside Workers’ Union, has been forwarded to Sir James Allen, Minister for Defence.
