TAILORS’ DISPUTE
BEFORE CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
Tie adjourned hearing of tie dispute between the Wellington Tailors' Union and t-ne . employers came before the Conciliation Council yesterday morning. The Conciliation Commissioner .(Mr \v. H. Bagger) presided, and the assessors for tho union were Messrs W. Waterivortn. D. Scott, and E. C. Wilson, and for tho employers Messrs D. Morrison, J. Doherty and J. Kay. Mr W. A. G; enfell acted as agent for the employers, and Mr M. J. Ecardon for the union. The union’s demands provide Ur a 44 hours week, and piece work at the rata of Is lid per. hour., The counter proposals of tho employers were for a 48 hours week, and a weekly wage of =£2 15s. In regard to apprentices the court’s preference clause was accepted, the wages being for tho first year, ,ss; second year, JOs; third year, 15s; and fourth year, 15s. In the first six months of the fifth vear, 25s per week shall be paid, and 30s for the second six months. It was agreed to insert an additional clause whereby an employer may not be compelled to pay an apprentice when he is away from work through sickness or default. .
The employers asked that certain restrictions be eliminated, and that they bo allowed to revert to what is known as the team system. The union representatives objected to this. The union representatives could not agree to several of tho employers’ counter proposals, and it was decided to adjourn the hearing indefinitely to await the decision of tho disnuto which is to bo heard in Auckland.
