MILITARY SERVICE BOARD

APPEALS DEALT WITH YESTERDAY. The Third Wellington Military Service Board met, yesterday, Mr H. J. Beswick presiding, with Messrs A. Q’L. Considine, and M. J. Mack as fellow members. Captain Baldwin represented, the military authorities. Adjournments indefinitely were granted in the cases of three Y.M-C.A. secretaries—Percy M. Velv-in, A. L. B a Ulrica rt, and H. Fawcett. Mr J. ty. MacDonald, on. behalf" of the Public Trustee, applied for leave until September for Leslie James Stanley, of Christchurch. He explained that, the position in the- Christchurch office was serious. Out of 260 men employed in the department 110 had gone to the front, most of whom had volunteered. Leave was granted as applied for. Leave until August 22nd was granted in the case of William T. York; farmer, Waikanae. The Controller of Customs (Mr Montgomery) applied for the. exemption of Walter R. B. Oliver, examining officer at, Auckland. He represented that Mr Oliver carried out important duties, and all understudies had gone. The case was adjourned indefinitely, but the chairman said: "You must . not think that your men will be exempted altogether. The time may come when they will all go.” “In that case,” said Mr - Montgomery,. “X will lose no time in placing the position before the. Minister.” The anneal of John Latamer was allowed on the ground that after seeing service he had been discharged as medically unfit. James Beel. farm labourer, was granted leave until August 22nd. The appeal of Edward Casey, labourer, previously hoard, was dismissed. Mr W. A. Kennedy, local manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, appeared to ask for the exemption of the following marine officers: —11. Williams (second). D. E. Bradney (third), Harry A. Brackett (third), Harold, C. Saunders (master). The cases were adjourned indefinitely. as were also those of several engineers in the employment of the comPi \lr H. F. O’Leary appeared on behalf of* Irchbishop O’Shea in reference to the cases of the Revs. K. McCrath (Catholic Presbytery. Nelson) and W. J. Saunderson (Man'aia), which were adjourned indefinitely.
