The' deceased was born in Kent, England, in 1847, educated at Woolwich, and entered the service of the North British Railway Company in 1863. After eleven years service witff that company, ho came to New Zealand, reaching Lyttelton in 1874, and joining the service of the New Zealand Railway Department the day after his- arrival. From 1890 to 1896 he was stationmaster at Lyttelton, after which he held important positions in Christchurch and elsewhere.
