ALARMING EXPERIENCE. SCOW COMPLETELY DISMANTLED. The scow Hawk, a vessel of 139 tons, formerly well known at Wellington, recently had an alarming experience on the New South Wales coast. The Hawk, owned hy B. D. Pike and Co., while proceeding from Sydney to Port Macquarie. ran into a gale of such force that the vessel's,- three masts were carried away and she was nearly swamped. The first mast to go—the main mast—carrisd away across the eide of the ship, and then-the foremast over the bow, and finally the mizzen stick carried away over the sterp, fouling the rudder-post. During this time the crew of seven, including the skipper and officers, exposed to the danger of falling wood, were cutting away the wreckage and keeping the shift, as well as possible, facing the wind. The mizzen mast was freed from the rudder, but in the operation one of the seamen received injuries to his head and hands AH the sails and boat gear were carried away, and the bowsprit . . was broken short. This, with the foremast.- had acted as a sea anchor, hanging by the bobstay. but without them it was impossible for’the crew to do useful work The wind continued to blow, at gale force;' with" heavy seas and the master ordered all hands to the pumps, owing to the alarming rate at which the Hawk was leaking. A iury mast was rigged up, but, with the -wind blowing at such a force, it was impossible to set any sail. and. in addition, there was no canvas on board likely to stand the strain of an ordinary wind. ‘ Captain Harris therefore was compelled to let his ship drift,'and a constant lookout Was kept fbr 'any "s’gn of . vessels. For four days the Hawk drifted until a cSble steamer was sighted and signalled. A sea anchor attached with a wire line was put overboard, but it was'carried away. After some manoeuvring the steamer got alongside, and put a line aboard the Hawk and towed her to Sydney.
