“White House,” Washington, which is one of the few “perquisites” of the Presidency, has the distinction of being the only house in America tenanted hr” a civil official which is the property of the National Government. Though not unattractive, it falls very far short of being palatial ;• and, indeed, many a private residence in the capital is more spacious and imposing, and more richly furnished. No sentries and very few' policemen guard the President’s home, and no liveried servants or officials are permitted him. Custom decrees that all the menials shall be negroes.
