At the late conference in Wellington of representatives of the various waterside unions of 'New Zealand, it-was decided to approach the shipowners- for. a national agreement, thus doing away with separate local agreements. The various unions represented intend to stand together in this matter. It was decided to demand an all-round increase of 7d per hour, which would bring the Wellington men’s pay for working general cargo during ordinary time from Is 5d to 2s an hour. The increase of ,d per hour applies to various other rates. The Australian minimum rate of pay for general cargo is Is 8d per hour, with double ordinary time for holidays and special rates for cement, Eme, manures, case oils, kerosene, naphtha, benzine, explosives, and other dangerous cargo. The New Zealand unions are demanding Is an hour increase over the present rate for ordinary cargo, for working petrol, kerosene, case oils, and explosives. The present rate is Is 5d for case oils, but labour of late has not been obtainable at less than 2s an hour ordinary time. The new demand raises the pay to 2s 3d per hour. The men are also demanding an increase from Is 6d to 2s 6d per hour, with a proportionate

increase for overtime for working superphosphates, sulphur, guano, bonednst, basic slag, Japanese phosphates, and pebbles ia bulk. An increase : of XOd per hour with a proportionate increase for overtime is sought for working bags or casts of cement, lime, sulphur, superphosphates, etc. The men are seeking to have holiday rates increased from time and a half to double the pay for ordinary days, and, further, that no fraction of an hour be paid'for; nothing less than a full hour to be recognised. Salvage workers are, according to the demands, entitled to full pay from the time they leave the- wharf until their arrival hack, At the Australian rates of pay. In fact the new demands are based practically on the Australian agreement. Th© various unions ore now awaiting a reply from th© shipowners with a view to coming to a settlement for a national agreement.
