FLEET OF SAILERS SUGGESTED

VANCOUVER, January 23
It is considered reasonably certain that the present shortage of tonnage in the Pacific will not he of long duration. It is believed that tho time is ripe for some form of official encouragement to shipowners. Powerful interests are contemplating tho construction of a large fleet, and are only awaiting tha opportune moment to make a demand for large bonuses, in view of the obvious fact that it will be necesary to construct quickly a number of ships that witi necessarily be of obsolete types and useless after tho wax.
Tt is officially denied that the Gov. eminent contemplates giving bonuses to Canadian shipowners to the oxclu sion of American bottoms. Guarantees are being asked for that “windjammers” of largo capacity, preferably with auxiliary power, to bo substantially built, immediately, shall ro ceive the utmost preference when Canadian-owned. The preference will probably take the form of remission of harbour dues.
