NEW ZEALAND’S FORCES
Mill BONAR LAW MISREIPORTED
A MISTAKE IN THE MONTH.
A cablegram published some days ago attributed to tho Colonial Secretary (Air Bonar Law) a statement that tho Government of Canada had announced that it would mobilise 500,000 troops, including those already under arms. Australia, it was estimated, would have 300,000 by June next, while New Zealand, it was estimated, would have about 36,000 troops, with regular reinforcements.
The figures were obviously inaccurate as far as New Zealand was concerned, if they were intended to mean that this Dominion would have sent awav only 36,000 men by June next, and tho Minister for Defence (Hon. James Allen) telegraphed to Mr Bonar Law on the point.
Yesterday the Minister received a reply stating that the date should have been January, not June, for New Zealand. The British Minister’s statement was that Now Zealand would have sent 36,000 men at the end of January, 1916. “That is nearer the mark,” said. Mr Allen yesterday.
