RECRUITING

MANY MEN OFFERING WELLINGTON DISTRICT'S GOOD RECORD. Recruits are continuing to come forward well, not only in the Wellington district, but also in many other parts of the country. The mobilisation of the 12th Reinforcements is now complete, and it appears that the total shortage is small. Probably the ranks will be filled within the next few days. Wellington city will. be sending in another eighteen men on Tuesday next. It is understood that this draft will complete the quota required from Wellington to fill shortages in the 11th Reinforcements. The call now is for recruits for the 13th Reinforcements, which will be mobilised on February Bth and succeeding days. Infantry recruits are still particularly required. The published figures showing the daily total of enlistments do not always represent the position accurately, owing to the fact that certain branches have big surpluses of recruits. The Artillery, Ambulance and Army Service Corps lists in Wellington are so long that they could supply full quotas for many months to come. Enough artillery recruits are in hand to meet all requirements for more than twelve months to come. Under these circumstances men who have their names added to the waiting lists for the overstocked branches are not helping the Defence Department to fill Reinforcoments in the immediate future. The Defence Minister (ilon. J. Allen) stated yesterday, in reference to these waiting lists, that instructions had been given some time previously that no further men were to be taken on for the Ambulance and Army Service Corps until the length of the lists had been reduced. The department wanted to direct the stream of recruits into the Infantry and Mounted Rifles, where they were more Urgently required. The rule seemed to have been relaxed to some extent in order to meet the wishes of recruits, but he thought it would have to be enforced. The lists were getting too long, and the recruits were required in tbo other branches. The following men, registered in Wellington, have been passed as medically fit:— Walter E. Barnes, linesman, city (Signaller). Joseph M Carroll, motor engineer, city (A.S.C.). William John McFarlane, city (Mounted). Frederick Kellagher, chauffeur, city (Wireless).
