MAKARA COUNTY
MEETING OF"THE COUNCIL. A meeting of the Makara County Council was held yesterday morning. Mr J. Monagkan (.chairman) presided, arid the councillors also present were Messrs J. H. Haggerty, A. J. Taylor, J. .Pyle, S. Bryant, and G- Monk. Before dealing .'with the business before it, the council, on the motion of the chairman, passed a vote of condolence and sympathy with the clerk (Mr W. L. Beech) on the death of his father. On the motion of Councillor: Monaghan, seconded by Councillor Pyle,; it was decided to grant the application of Mr F. Wales to remove his fence' to the outer edge of the road formation, the work to be done under the supervision of Councillor i"yle, and the fence to remain in: its new position at the council'spleasure. A verbal ap .plication on the same lines by Mrs King was left to Councillor Pyle to deal .with. It was resolved that application be again made to the Public Works Department for a grant for the Titahi road.
The ranger reported that a boatshed on the. county reserve at Titahi Bay had been boarded up, and was being used as a dwellir-ghouse, or weekend whare. Complaints had been received as to the large numbers living there, and the total lack of sanitary arrangements. On the motion! of Councillor Monaghan, seconded by Councillor Taylor, it was resolved that the building inspector be instructed to prosecute if the facts are as stated, and that if the premises are in occupation as a dwelling notice to quit be immediately given. It was pointed out that sections would never be sold out there if people were allowed to build dwellings on the reserve. It was decided that the registration fee for dogs be fixed at 2s 6d per dog for the year, and that the ranger be appointed dog register at remuneration of sixpence per dog. The council discussed the suggestion, made at the first meeting of the Hutt Road Board, to construct a concrete motor-highway twenty feet -wide throughout the entire length of the Hutt road. Councillors were of the opinion that it is too early for such a scheme, and the chairman was instructed to oppose the suggestion. Remarking on the cost of maintenance of the Hutt road, _the chairman said that they would have to come to a toll-gate. He did not see the force of ratepayers paying for the upkeep of a road they did not use.- Let those who .used the <-oad pay. Councillor Haggorty said that would mean going back over fifty years. Ho didn't think it could be done nowadays. Councillor Briant said that the question was wnere could they put a toll-gate. Accounts to the amount of £415 14s 7d were passed for payment. Of this sum £l5B represents the council's quarterly contribution to the Hospital Board. The police were instructed to prosecute offenders for removing spoil from the Ohiro Bay reserve.
