Mr Robert Alston, ai well-known and highly-respected resident, of the Levin district, died yesterday at the Otaki -hospital, aged twenty-five years- For some time deceased had been farming at the Weraroa Training Farm, where he was very popular, and his death has naturally' caused much regret. He only arrived in New Zealand about fifteen months ago, and was unmarriedHis parents, - who reside in Ayrshire (Scotland), are also very highly respected. ' ,

The opening of the new cheese fac-, tory at Te Mono on. Monday was a ; great success, there being a large attendance of farmers and their friends.. Speechifying was the order of the day; while a splendid luncheon was also served. Mr Kennedy has sold his Manakau property to Mr Swainson, of Pongaroa. Private Bayiiss, son : of Mr j J., Bayliss, of Manakau, has been wounded on two .occasions. Mr Bayiiss received word from his son in hospital reporting the first wound, and three weeks later received word to say he had been wounded a second time. This appears record time, and it is evident men with slight wounds are hurried, back to the front. •

Mr W. H. Karsten. who has been in an indifferent state of health for some time, returned to Palmerston North last night, after a holiday spent in Christchurch. Ho is cousiderally benefited by the trip. A number of young men left this district yesterday to go into camp at Trentham- All were of fine stamp, and several of them are highly popular. On Monday (Labour Day) the Otaki and Te Hiwi Bowling Clubs will meet at Otaki in a three-rink contest- The following will represent the visitors:— Jeffrey, Brinsdcn, Frost, Hill (s); Holdsworth, McCUutock, Ingram, S halier asp (s); Innis, Wiggins, Ferguson, and Benzie (s). So far the local teams have not been picked. Mr P. W. Goldsmith has been elected clerk to the Horowhenua County Conn-, cil, the choice being made out of 75 applicants. Mr Goldsmith has been clerk to the Levin Borough Council for a number of years.
