SUBURBAN NEEDS
PETITION TO BB PRESENTED TO CITY COUNCIL. A meeting of the recently-formed Aro street, Taitville, and Mitydielltown Householders’ Association was held in the Mission Hail-, Aro street, last night. Mr O. W. Tanner presided over a fairly large gathering of residents. ’ Tile executive committee reported that they had circulated tho following petition, and that over 200 signatures of bona fide residents had been obtained thereto:—“To His Worship tho Mayor and councillors .of tho city of Wellington.—We, the undersigned rate-' payers and householders of Aro street, Mitohelltown, and Taitville districts, desire to lay before you tho claims of our district to more consideration at the hands of your council than it has hitherto received. More particularly would we refer to (1) the open creek at St. John street, (2) the present unsatisfactory tram service, (3) the disposition of tho triangular piece of land at the tram terminus, and (4) generally, the lighting, drainage, and street works of tho district. All of these matters, we beg to submit, are requiring urgent attention of the municipal authorities of tho city.’’ It was decided that the council be requested to receive the deputation at its next mooting- The following were appointed to voice tho grievances of tho district before tho council :—Messrs C. W. Tanner (president), H. D. AlcCarthy (secretary), and W. H. Hampton. It was decided, on the recommendation of tho committee, that the membership of the association be open to any ratepayer, householder, or elector of tho district for a nominal fee of Is for ladies and 2s 6d for gentlemen. During tho meeting it was mentioned that the iron tramway posts had been, removed from Aro street and old wooden posts made use of . itriming stated that the iron poles had been required in some more favoured and ornamental district.
