AUSTRIAN OFFER TO ROUMANIA
Tile “Daily Chronicle's” correspondent reports the heaviest fighting at Gallipoli since the Allies landed. It resulted in the swing forward of the southern line five furlongs, and staggering losses to the enemy. Athens states that the Turks are attempting to arrange peace with the Allies. Italian participation at the Dardanelles, it is said, has been only postponed. It is narrated that the Kaiser has dismissed Field-Marshal von Hindenburg because he told the Kaiser that the war had reached a point where Germany could not obtain any further advantage, and advised the Kaiser to find moans of stopping the needless slaughter. Austria is reported to have offered to cede to Roumania a portion of Bukovina in return for benevolent neutrality, and she would add the retrocession of Bessarabia (which, by the way, belongs to Russia), if Roumania would intervene on behalf of Austria. Swiss messages aver that Germany fears that Austria will not bo able to hold out to the end.
