PREVENTION OF CRUELTY

DOCKING TAILS OF MILITARY

HOUSES. The committee of the Wellington Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals met last night, Mr J. S. Jamieson presiding. In reference to the society’s protest against tho docking of manes and toils of horses connected with the expeditionary forces a letter was received from the Minister for Defence stating that this procedure was adopted for sanitary reasons; All precautions were necessarily taken by the veterinary officers against the spread of skin diseases. A long mane or tail would assist _ in harbouring vermin and perpetuating coutagious skin affections, thus rendering their eradication difficult. The tails of the horses, stated the Minister, are not shortened beyond trimming off straggling ends sufficiently to produce a neat , appearance. A letter was received from Mrs JN. E. Fannin, Masterton. storing that as a result of drawing public attention to the good work of the society and appealing for donations to further the cause she had received £2 14s 6d. The inspector (Mr J. Henry) reported having investigated a number of minor oases which had come under his notice, and all of them had been satisfactorily attended to.
