PETONE AFFAIRS

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Petone Borough Council met last night, when there were present:—The Major (Mr J. W. McEwan), and Councillors E. W. Forsyth. W. Cox. C. PBrocklebank,' A. Anderson, J. McXlougal, D. McKenzie, E. H. Jones, and W. Freeman. The engineer (Mr A. Cowie) reported that the wet weather had prevented the metalling of the streets, and the Hutt road was showing signs of wearing, due in a large measure to the great increase of traffic to and from the Trentham camp. Filling-in work was progressing on the beach, improvement scheme and the area was to bo sown in grass when the time was suitable. It was not recommended that the work of widening Nevis, Aitmidale and Lee by streets .be undertaken' as they- were amply wide enough for the traffic. The work of planting the recreation ground was being undertaken. The borough inspector (Mr W. B, Gongh) reported having inspected seventy-one premises during June, and notiaes to undertake improvements, where necessary, had been issued. The drainage engineer (Mr R. Fox) furnished a report on the progress of the sewerage drainage scheme, the cost of which amounted to .£38,442 4s Id to date. ■ ,
