HOW MANY SICK?
NO FIGURES YET AVAILABLE,
The efforts of a representative of the "New Zealand Times” to secure official figures regarding the number of soldiers who have fallen -victims to sickness of one kind or another have been unsuccessful. It is possible that some statistics may be available to-day. The estimate of a member of Parliament that 1600 men have suffered during recent weeks may prove not very wide- of the mark. ’ The patients are scattered over a wide area and several hundreds of men are on . sick leave. The number of hospitals in use at the present time has not been stated officially.. There are patients at the Wellington* public hospital, the Berhamporo hospital, the Kaiwarra convalescent home, the Trentham hospital, the Trentham racecourse buildings, and the Horetaunga golf house. The golf house is stated to contain 76 invalids at the present time. Then there are sick soldiers in various homes in Heretaunga and there -are hundreds of “partially sick” doing light duties with the various units. It was stated yesterday that an imperative demand for information about the number of men affected might come from Parliament this week. The feeling in the House of Representatives is running very high and many members feel that they are being denied information they should possess.
