From Our Own Correspondent. MASTERTON, July 12. Heavy rain fell throughout Wairarapa on Saturday and flooded much low-lying country. The price of butter in Masterton has risen to Is 9d per fcound. In the Wairarapa ladies’ championship hockey match Ruahine defeated Feathorston by 12 goals to nil. The Rualilne team, which hails from Greytown, promises to be as equally successful on the hockey field as the famous Kia Toa team (also ,a Greytown combination) which was never defeated during the many years it won the Wairarapa championship. In the weekly competition held by the Masterton Miniature Rifle Club the best scores were; D. McLeay 70 A. V. Swanson 70, D. Davey 68, J. A. Young 67, C. Hoffeins 67, H. Liddie 66, W. Rossou 66, L. Walsh 66, F. Hill 66, J. Johnson 66, F. Munn 66. There are at present twenty-five patients in the Masterton Hospital, four being in the fever ward. Messrs J. Staples and Co., of Wellington, have purchased the freehold of the Royal Hotel, Featherston, the figure paid being about £7OOO. Houses are very difficult to obtain in Masterton. An instance is_ recorded of where four families are living in a seven-roomed house. The sum of £IOO was realised by the performance given at Masterton in aid of the wounded soldiers’ fund by the “Rose of Joy” children from Carterton, who were capably trained by Airs Birss.
Tbs Masterton Trust Lands Trust has thrown out a motion to sot aside a portion of a trust site whereon a monument to the Masterton soldiers who fall in the war could be erected. The most favoured spot is the Park, or the entrance to the Park, and if a monument is erected one of these sites will undoubtedly be selected.
