COALITION
To the Editor "N.Z. Times." ■Sir* —I have no desire here to question tho why or how the coalition of Diberais and Unionists in the British Cabinet was brought about. 1, merely wish to point out a contrast. Our Massey Government is evidently wanting it. The British Unionists evidently forced it, and after the allotment of portfolios. Sir E. Carson’s first move was an. attempt to foist on Ireland as Lord Chancellor the obnoxious person, J. H. Campbell, M.P. for Dublin University, and a castle hack, whose mission in life appeared to he to brand the people of Ireland as lineal descendants of Cain. This attempt of Sir E. Carson the "London Daily Chronicle” did not hesitate to mildly 'term “ a deplorable scandal," and yet your very virtuous evening contemporary roundly rated tho Redmond party, with some hundred English IM.P.’s, as disturbers of the peace, because they exposed and opposed this deplorable scandal. Is it any wonder that J. E, Redmond declined a seat in the British Cabinet? I am proud he is possessed of a backbone.
Will our Liberal party prove their backbone? or be cajoled into selling their political birthright for a proverbial mess of pottage. Kindly permit me to add the following appropriate parody:—
Will you step into my parlour, said the spider to the fly. I feel a bit uncomfortable, without a
word of lie. This pesky war is hanging on, I want your parties’ aid. Coalition is my remedy, so do not be
afraid. My majority is almost nil, one can hardly ever guess When awkward hurdles may appear to drop me in a mess. A square deal is my motto, so there is no reason why That you should fear my parlour said the spider to the fly.—l am, etc., “PADDY MURPHY.”
