NOTES AND COMMENTS

Grattan, who ran second to Crown Pearl in the Tawhiti .Handicap at Hawora on Wednesday, is a six-year-old Coronet gelding from domain. As a four-year-old ho won tho Borough Hack Handicap at the Taranaki Christmas meeting with 7.5 from Denis Ormo aud Simple Sam, among others, and at the Egmont summer meeting he carried 8.5 to victory in the Mere Mere Hack Handicap in a field of twenty-one. He contested several other events in tho Tara'naki district during that season, and was placed on more than one occasion. At tho Wellington, summer meeting in 1913 Grattan met Passadena, Monologue, Big Blast, War Queen, and Austin, in a field of fifteen that started for tho Ruapehu Handicap, and won by a length. Last season he started on eighteen occasions, and secured two first, two second, and tivo third places. The events he won were the Telegraph Handicap at the Marten summer meeting and the Mokoia Handicap at the Egmont winter meeting, when, with a handicap of Bst, ho accounted for RevV Poto, Kaniki, Wild Lupin., Zetes, Glenfern, Tetikura, and Simple Sam. During the gallop over tho six furlongs he kept in a handy position,-and in the run home beat Rowi Poto by a head.

Acceptances for the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase, as well as tho general entries, close this evening. Glacier certainly looked a good thing for the Ladies’ Purse Handicap at the Egmont meeting on Wednesday, and tho public wore not slow to weigh the mare’s chances of success, as she was sent out favourite and won with plenty of reserve.

In the Telegraph Handicap Tyson’s weight evidently was the cause of the gelding not starting favourite. Zion, after her win in the Woodhey Handicap at the Manawatu autunin meeting, gained the most of the support, but was unable to foot it with Tyson. In the Woodhey Back at Awapuni' tho Coronet gedding conceded Zion 21st, and in tho Cloverlea Handicap Tyson ran second to her with 9.13 on his back compared with Zion’s 8.8. At Hawera on Wednesday Zion had an advantage of 101 b in the Telegraph Handicap.

It is admitted that-the Martian mare Sunbird ran a splendid race at the Manawatu summer meeting, when she beat a number of good horses in the Longhorn Handicap. On that occasion she left the mile and a quarter behind in 2min 7scc, which is fast time for the journey. On the first.day of the meeting, in the Autumn Handicap, she went out favourite and missed getting a place, while on the following day the public, left her alone, when she scored, and returned a handsome dividend to Her supporters '

_ The ■ big handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting, which, was decided on Wednesday, has been altered in name from the President’s to 1 the Kitchener Handicap. Last ■ season this event was won : by Frandocia with a handicap of 7sec, the two miles being covered in; 4mm 54 3-sseo. The course was slightly on the heavy side and on ■ Wednesday last it was decidedly heavy. - Adonis, this season!s winner, ran a poor third to Frandocia the ,previous year, when ho started from scratch. On Wednesday the aged son of Harold Dillon, with a handicap of 3sec, turned the on Frandocia by easily defe'a'tinghim. The time for the two miles (smin 4seo) was slow under ordinary conditions, but taking the sloppy nature of the ground into consideration was not out of the way. Adonis- is a■. handsome stallion and is‘ endowed with staying powers of no mean order. He was greatly fancied for . the New Zfealand .Cup Handicap - at Christchurch in the spring, and last season won, a couple of important events. Adonis is driven and trained by F. Holmes. Frandocia, who ran second ,to Adonis in the Kitchener Handicap at Forbury Park, is a gelding, liis sire being Franz and his dam Cappadocia. At _ the New Zealand Metropolitan spring meeting a season ago he appeared in the Australasian Handicap (m saddle), in which ho had 12sec, and trotted in the easiest of winners in 4min 46sec. In the Wilkin Handicap at the Metropolitan Easter meeting last year he scored a victory with a. handicap of 4sec, accomplishing the two miles on that occasion in 4rain 43 l-ssec, and at the Forbury Park winter meeting he won the President’s Handicap as previously stated. Jack Ashore, the winner of the Flying Handicap at the Dunedin trotting meeting, has won a number of races m the North Island. He has been trained in Canterbury of late. Gold wood, who defeated Adonis in the Regent Handicap at Forbury Park on Wednesday, has not been very successful in the past on the trotting track. He is a stallion and as a four-year-old only started on one occasion, when he failed to finish in a place. Tho following season ho started twice and finished third in the Dash Handicap to Futurity at the New Brighton summer meeting. Last season ho faced the starter on five occasions and was seuccossful in the Weston Handicap at tho Oamaru annual meeting with a handicap of 12sec. over a mile and a-quartcr. As a three-year-old he won the Electric Handicap at the Otahuhu spring meeting with plenty to spare. Tho correct totalisator figures for the Forbury. Park trots are: —Last year, £13,687 10s; this year, £13,347—a .decrease of £240 10s. EGMONT RACES Press Association. HAWERA, May 13!
