ENGLISH LADIES* TEAM DEW PEATLD. Press Association. GISBORNE, August 12, - The English ladies’ hockey team sustained the first defeat of their tour today, Poverty Bay registering a victory by 5 goals to nil. The game was fast and snappy all through, and though the visitors were not at home on the ground, which was somewhat rough as compared with Hastings, they took their defeat in true British spirit, and admitted that they had gone down before a superior team. When the teams took the field there was noticeable a striking contrast between the physique of the sides. Compared with the compactly built, athletic English ladies, the Poverty Bay representatives looked like school . misses marked out for slaughter. A surprise, However, was in store.
