Tho party anticipated being rescued by the Mexican gunboat Tampico, but tho Constitutionalists captured and sank her. There was a small Mexican colony on the island.

Food ran low, and three of tho crewstarted for tho mainland, arriving after seventeen days of great suffering due to shortness of food and water. The cruiser Cleveland rescued tho party and transferred them to the City of Sydney.
