WANGANUI NOTES

Special to the “Times.’ ' WANGANUI. July 12. Fred Tilley intends leaving Fordell tomorrow with lianiki and .both ot whom are to bo started in the Stewards Handicap, at Trentham on Wednesday, all going well, Both have been doing good work and should run well., lianiki is being specially prepared for the Winter Cup, and the race at Trentham should servo as a good guiuo as to his Riccarlon prospects. Kew has had a few' lessons over the small sticks lately, and has acquitted himself in a way that he ought to be fairly successful over the hurdles. .It is probable he will be given a chance to distinguish himself at this game while at Biocarton. Goodwin Park has broken down, and it is said to be very unlikely that ho wall ever race again. Had he kept sound ho would have been one of the best backed candidates for the Grand National Hurdles, for which event Leonta will now be the hope of the Fordell stable. The Conqueror gelding was shaping fairly well in his schooling lessons until a few days ago, when he rapped some of the hurdles rather hard, and as a consequence was very sore, for a few days. It is expected that he will be all right again in a day or two. P. Coffey is also leaving to-morrow for Trentham with Darby Paul and Kurnalpi, botli of whom are very fit, and on the work they have been doing should win a race or' two between them very shortly. The pair had a spin over the hurdles yesterday, both jumping,.really well. Kurnalpi showed a lot of dash, and- 1 he is evidently a much improved hurdler. Darby Paul .is in capital fettle, and is expected to be going very strong at the finish of the Winter Hurdles on Wednesday. Still • another visitor ,to Trentham will be Antarctic, who is leaving hero in the morning in charge of J. Peachey, who has the Salvador gelding looking very, well indeed, though it is hard to say how he will faro when it comes to racing. All his training has been done on the sea beach, and he has not been put over a fence this season. He was given a very solid gallop on the sand the other day, and when pulled up showed no signs of lameness. While he appeared to be all right in the wind. His owner, Mr W. R. Tuck, has great hopes that the gelding will surprise those critics who declare that he has no chance of winning another race. .With such a dicky leg it looks, like a forlorn hope, but if Antarctic , does manage to score it will be a very popular win here.
