WAIRARAPA MATCHES

NORTH v. SOUTH. Special to the “ Times.” MASTER!'ON, July 11. The annual_ match between North Wairarapa and South Wairarapa was played at Masterton this afternoon. The game was spoiled by heavy rain, which fell almost incessantly, and a strong wind was blowing. The meteorological conditions made the ball very difficult to handle; consequently there was very little back play. The ball was in such a greasy state that the backs repeatedly mulled it, and the game degenerated at times into a mere scramble. There were several nice forward rushes on either side. In the first spell North played, with the wind behind them. They attacked most of. the time and repeatedly forced South, but their only score was a try registered by Don Ross after a clover piece of foot work. In the second spell the conditions wore reversed, and South did most of the attacking and forced the North several times and narrowly missed, registering a score on a number of occasions. Just before tho close of the spoil Redmond made a sensational run for South and scored. McKenzie converted, and the game ended :■— South o. North 3. G. Masson played a safe game at fullback for South, while Groube and Matson were also sound in defence. Tait I took some marks, but was plainly not at homo in the position of half, being completely eclipsed in play by Wakens, the North half. Of the South forwards tho best wore Brough, McKenzie, Desmond, and J. Blake. Wickens, Blackmoro, Wynyaid, and Ross were tho best of tho North backs, and Hodge, D. Ross, Clarke, and Johnston were tho pick of a solid lot of North forwards. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP, Red Star 15, beat Gladstone 8; Dalefield 3, beat Carterton 0, MEETING OF "THE UNION.
