“GAMBLING IN LIVES”
STRONG COMMENT BY NEW SOUTH WALES PREMIER.
(Received Juno 1, 9.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 1
The State Premier, Mr W. A. Holman, speaking to-day of the Empress of Ireland tragedy, said he supposed “the inquiry will end in the condemnation of some unfortunate second piato or seaman. There will be no safety for tbe travelling public until the* directors of companies wllfch send 1500 people to sea in a ship capable pf destruction in fifteen minutes are put on trial as accessories to manslaughter.” Mr Holman expressed the hope that the Canadian Government would deal with the calamity in that spirit. He was not saying anyone was innocent or guilty; the disaster might ’ have been a mere act of God, “but if it be due to human failing tbe people who make money by gambling in human lives ought to be punished.”
