MID-WEEK COMPETITION

TRAMWAY v. ARTILLERY. Tramway met Artillery at Athletic Park yesterday afternoon, the game .ending in a draw, each side scoring 3 ; points. Shortly after the kick-off Tramway wok the leather into Artillery's territory, and two good chances of scoring hvero spoiled by Fisher holding on too 'long. Artillery in turn forced play to Tramway's line, but a mark by Mosfcliini saved the situation. Matters for a time were fairly even, neither side 'showing to any great advantage. On .account of a lot of off-sido play, penality kicks were numerous, and -several igood opportunities to score were conmissed. Tramway then began |to attack vigorously, and had their (opponents in trouble on more than one occasion. A breach of the rules gave Tramway a free liiek, in a good position, and this enabled Algar to place ■a goal. Artillery, however, were not to he denied, and had Tramway vigorously defending* for a short period, but they were unable to score, for ■the bell sounded a few minutes laterTramway 3, Artillery 0. i Play in the second half was very oneIsided, Tramway pressing matters almost from the start. They commenced ia dribbling rush which was brought to an abrupt termination by off-side play. The ball was sent down the field, with Artillery in hot pursuit, but again offsido play stopped their attack- This gave Artillery an opportunity to equalise matters, and Owles kicked a good goal. Tramway again returned to the attack, and several times went near scoring, but over-anxiousness on the part of some of their men gave Artillery a chance to relievo. There was no further score, and the game ended in a draw. Mr C. Ros'kruge was referee.

PETONE v. OBIENTAL,

Petonc defeated Oriental at Petone by 20 points to nii. The visiting team had a number of players new to Bugby, and on the whole made a creditable showing. Perry, who played for Oriental, despite his handicap of only having tho use of one hand, played an excellent game, and led most of tho forward rushes for the “magpies.” Towards the end of the game Perry had the misfortune to injure his hip, which caused his retirement. Petone had the help of Nunn and Madden, and simply outclassed tho opposition by cleverness. McLeod, for Oriental, was safe. Petone kicked off, and play was very even for a while. Corson had a lack at goal from a mark for Petone, and Perry essayed an attempt for Oriental without result. Good forward rushes were carried out by each division; on one occasion a try to Petone was saved by a mark by McLeod. From half-way, Nunn, working th© silly side of a scrum prettily, instituted a passing rush. The ball passed from Nunn to Wynyard, on to Taplin and finally to Hagan, who scored between the goal posts. Madden failed with tho kick. Petone 3, Oriental 0. Almost immediately afterwards, a Petone rush ended in McEwan touching down. Corson kicked a fine goal from a difficult angle. Petono 8, Oriental 0. Petone, through the instrumentality of Taplin, were within an ace of scoring again, but Hagan got in front. Still continuing to press, McEwan potted at goal, and made a good attempt to find the crossbar. Nunn was in everything that was going, and continually had the Petono backs on th© move. Through unselfishness, McEwan lost a certain try, and Oriental gained relief by forcing. Each side were forced down in turn. - and then from a scramble near Oriental goal-line, Taplin picked up the ball, and passed it smartly to Nunn, tho latter dropping over the line. Corson’s kick wont wide. Petone 11, Oriental 0. Painton, for Oriental, was next to show up, and coming away by himself, made good headway, hut was unsupported. Nunn got possession, and passed well out to Wynyard. Tho latter showed a clean pair of heels, and when tackled handed to Madden, who sprinted in and scored. Corson again failed with the kick. Petone 14, Oriental 0. Evenson was the next to score for Petono after a passing bout, in which Madden and Wynyurdjtook part. No goal resulted from Corson’s kick. Petone 17, - Oriental 0. Give-and-take kicking followed, the last score to Petono being obtained by Tressider from a forward rush. Madden took the kick at goal, and failed, tho game ending, Petono 20 points, Oriental nil. Mr H. Card was referee.'
