TRAINING NOTES

Special to the “Times. WANGANUI, May 20. The weather was fine aids morning tor' the final gallops, and tnero were some smart gallops. Bertrada (W. Boll) hopped off at the mile post, h ir!ing Line joining in at seven •furlongs, .and tho pair finished togethei at the lend of a mile in limn 46 f c ™‘ Vr t\. Reed) and First Consul (W. Bell) covered seven furlongs in Irani dtecc, the former appearing to have the I)estop the go. Red Book and _ Cheddai covered six furlongs in dram 18scc, 'both going well, though Cheddar appeared to hold his companion safely. Ho appears to be. back to Ins best form, and will take a power of beating in the Connolly Handicap. 1 nncess Montoa (W, Young) ran five furlongs in Imin 3-1 sec, moving very nicely, and she must have a big chance in the ;Purua Hack Race. Pcromlla and {Brunswick, separately, each took 62sec to run half a mile. Postillion, who is looking remarkably well, ran five furlongs in Imin 3asee, _ Lconta (W. Price) covered the last six furlongs of ■two rounds in Imin 20sec. Goodwin Park moved very lattraqlbively over two rounds, covering the last mil© in Jniin 49scc. Kaniki sprinted half a (mile in 53sec. Passive and Lcolanter jumped two of tho big fences toJgether, hut neither shaped too well. From half to three-quarter pace •work was done by the following; Huia, Parewanui, Bercola, Cornelian, Master Lupin, Biro Atu, Fidessa, Bpalfish, Lady Elgiva, Tho Spaniard, ;The Great Mogul, Byron, Adroit, Makara, Ngarua, Square Deal,. Ivurapai, Gladiole, Settler, EsparteroT Player, Mescal, St. Gate, and several others. Gondolier was on the track, but did not work. . . , 0 . Tho latest arrivals include Sir Lethe, Player, The Great Mogul, Glenmere, and Kauroa. The weather promises to be fine for to-morrow, when some good racing should be witnessed. Postillion is likely to start favourite in the Borough Handicap, as ho is in I great form. Play Off and Wild Lujpin are tho most fancied of tho others.

If Gondolier is kept for the big event, Exotic will probably carry most money 'in tho Hack Steeples, though Karimoi is very well, and, being a fine jumper, must have a big chance. It lias been stated _ that Glemnore is an unlikely starter in the big steeples, but he has arrived here, and bears a well-trained appearance, as does his stable mate, Kauroa. it is doubtful if Glemnore was ever better, and it will he no surprise to find him carry the confidence of, the stable. F. Flynn has been engaged to ride him. Mr Cameron’® pair will no doubt carry more money than Bercola, which will ho the next best hacked. He is much fancied, and ,it is understood his connections are supporting him, coupled with Corneli:an in the Century Hurdles, to win a I lot of money. Tho Spaniard is perjhaps hardly ready yet, but he races Ihig, and there are many who think the has a second to none chance. Of the others, Gondolier must be hard to heat. He is a very fine jumper, and Iso also is Jackman, which should run & great race. Riro Atu is very fit, pud may effect a surprise. Kurnalpi is the most fancied of the candidates for the Hack Hurdles, though Clemency is expected to show improvement on his Hawera running. Cornelian shaped so well in a spin over the hurdles with Arnake yesterday morning, that he is likely to be made favourite for the Century Hurdles, though Player is a strong tip, and Goodwin Park has many supporters. Arnake has developed ft habit of hitting his hurdles, and this has put him out of favour somewhat. However, ho may jump cleanly tomorrow, in which case he will trouble th© best of them, as he never looked hotter. Darby Paul .struck himself at Hawera the'other morning, and it is understood ho will not be a starter.

The Connolly Handicap should be n* fine race. Bcrtrada, Cheddar and jLoonta are tho three most fancied [candidates. Rewi Poto is sure to run well and has been strongly supported, but a doubt exists as to him joeing tho journey out. A big field will be seen out in the Purua Hack in which ..Square Heal, Master Lupin, Firing Lino, and the better of W. Home’s pair, Dekkbo and More On, are expected to run prominently. Dustin’s, Ltd., tho well-known caterers of Palmerston and Wanganui, have been appointed caterers at the Wanganui Races. Patrons are thus assured of the best. *
