WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB’S WINTER MEETING

ACCEPTORS REVIEWED. Tho Wanganui Jockey Club will open their winter meeting at Wanganui^today, and conclude it on Saturday. The; principal events to come up for dot ■cision this afternoon aro the Wanga-> Inui Steeplechase, Connolly Handicap, and Century Hurdles. Although a. ■a good number dropped out of thoj three races when the acceptances felt duo, there aro still good_ fields, and there seems to bo every indication of come good racing. Tlio afternoon S sport will be commenced with the Borough Handicap, six. furlongs.--Postillion 9.1, Patronale 8.4, Sir Moses ley 8.4, Peronilla 5.3, Play Off (me. 71b pen.) 8, Wild Lupin 7.13, Adroit 7.13, The Great Mogul 7.11, Spalfish 7.9, Sanguinary 7.1, Epworth 6.12., General Madero 6.7. Postillion is likely to bo made a good (favourite, and as ho will not be mcet'ing in the same street as Merry Roe, its big impost should not stop liinq and the racing ho had at Hawke’s Boy will have improved him considor•ably. Patronale has done a lot of , (racing during the season, and at the Weights Peronilla or Tho Great Mogul should beat him. Sir Moseley baa disappointed his supporters many times, and may bo he would be all thh (better for a rest. Play Off won at ISgmont, and the tacrics adopted there, viz, racing him in behind his field, seems to have made a difference.' [llo should, under similar run well forward to-day. Of tho •others, the EUersli-e-trained Spalfish may effect a surprise. Wanganui Steeplechase, three miles. Borcola 12, Gienmore 12, Tho Bpaniardl 11.10, Sir Lethe 10.13. Kauroa 10.13,j ■Morihiko 10.5, Gondolier 10.2, Pas-i jsivo 9.12, Te Whctu 9.12, Jackman; 'O.ll, Northern. 9.7, Sportsman 9.7,| Jliro Atu 9.7. I Bercola has done a fair amount ofj (racing, and should be fairly well sea'soned, but according to reports he; does not appear to move in his work with the same dash as ho displayed 1 '■last year, and it would probably ha, well to pass him over for the meantime. Gienmore is an unlikely starter, and it is stated his stable mate,, Kauroa, will bo tho stable repreaenta-j tivo. Ho has therefore come in folia lot of support. Ho won a double at this meeting twelve months ago, so thero is no question about his being able to both stay and jump big country well. Too much notice can- 1 not bo taken of his Manawatu forml in both hurdle races. Ho did noa look ready, and the runs ho had thorn should have sharpened him up. Tho iSpaniard looked burly at Hawke's Bay, and can hardly bo expected to bo at his best. Sir Letho, too, i fancy, has only been up a comparatively short time, but he does not require a groat deal of work to put hinn right. However, Ido not favour his chances over three miles. Morihiko showed fair form last season, but' though iio did not do anything to warrant* his having a chanoo in present company, there is always the glorious uncertainty of steeplechase racing to be considered. Gondolier, too, showed last year that ho would improve with experience, and very encouraging accounts aro to hand regarding him. Jackman is also given credit of being a good fencer, and if such is tho case, and ho can get the journey,, he should prove dangerous. Sports-' man I don’t think will get threo miles, and I also question whether Uiro Atu will.

Connolly Handicap, one mil© and a quarter.—Deonta (me. 71b (pen.) 9,i jßyron. 8.13, Goldsize S7lO, Itedhookl i 8.5, Bertrada 8.5, Cheddar (inc. 71b! pen.) 8.4. Manitau 8, Itowi Poto 7,13,1 ■ First Consul 7.8, Bottler 7, Manitaroa 1 6,9.

| ' Leonta showed a (glimpse of th© good, (reputation he earned in private by winning at Egmont, but ibe has plenty I of.weight to-day. Byron is consistent liand is stiro to bo in the argument at jtho finish, while Aucklanders will not! hear of Goldeiae’s defeat. His form, .of late has been good, and the Wangu-i pui course should suit him nicely. Bed) Book is a short-striding horse that) should also feel at homo on the tracK. ;H© was a trifle unlucky at Hawke's! jßay, and may possibly make amends, |toi<lay, hut Benbrada on the sahwij ;maxk reads particularly w©U. Chod-( id-ar, on account of his win in bhol jManaia Handicap at Hawera, lias in-', cur red a 71b penalty, and in present! company he may find the extra poundage troublesome. Of the others, First Consul and Settler read best. Thai former has performed consistently of! late, and can be depended upon to give a good account of himself. Century Hurdles, two miles and a qiiarter. —Espartero 11.9, Player 10.13,i Goodwin Pax - k 10.10, Darby Paul 10.0,, Cornelian 10.5, Hula 10, Aruake 9.12, Master Tupuhi 9. Espartero has not had a race for some time, and will hardly bo at him best to-day. Player, on his Haw hob Bay form, will probably carry most, money, and is sure to run prominent-i ly. Goodwin Park may also, do bet-, ter after a couple of races, bub Ins party do not think so, for they greatly fancy his prospects. Darby Paul has. been shaping very satisfactorily in hia, work, and is expected to put up a good fight, hut Cornelian may not he started, as I understand he has been causing his trainer some anxiety with one of his legs. His performances at the C.J.C. autumn meeting were very disappointing, and on that form can have very little chance, unless Kilmenny, which defeated him, is an exceptionally good one. .Hula will find the extra quarter of a mile troublesome, and Arnako has not been doing j too well in his recent efforts. Hack Steeples, two miles.—Leolanler 11.5, Gondolier 11, Waterworks 10.8. Exotic 10.7, Silver Monarch 10.0, Karimoi 10,5, Rufus 9.10, Is'ertheni 9.7, Makiri 9.7.

A rather poor lot figure in this, event. Old Lcolanter has a good hurclen to carry, and Gondolier will more than likely ho started in. the big steeples. Waterworks pave tivo dis-i appointing displays at Trenthani, but! F.xotic won very easily on the second day of the same meeting, and looks, like turning out useful. Ho will prob-i

el y bo made a good favourite, but i:; Silver .Monarail ho no 11 find a d.'ffitnit- proposition. The latter now meets K.cotio on 17ib better term a than when they mot at Trenlham. n Kiaixoke Hurdles, on© nv* o three-quarters.—‘Sam Pan 12.2, Aruako U. 3, St. Gate 'lO.ll, Ivurnaip; 10.10, Manawakaha 10.9, Clemency 0.3, Waldomar 0.5, Parewanui U.l, Royal Medal 0.1, Pracfactus 9, bweet Breeze 9. This race contains a number ot ununknown quantities. Sam Pan is a 'really good sort, but bo has a lot or weight, and St. Cate or Kurnalpi may receive more support. ManawaKaha i.-. Spoken of as a likely sort, but Pureisanui lot his party down badly at Egmont. He, however, is only a novice at the game, and his experience at Hawera should have don© him a heap of good. Puma. Hack, eight furlongs and a half.—Squaro Deal 9.6, Sty rax 0.3 Master Lupin 9, Firing Inn© 8.9, John Willie 8.9, Conncy 3.8, Princess Montoa 8.5, Ivuranai 8.4, Sir Dona d 7.10, Lady Elgiva 7.10, Minora 7.6, Combustion 7.5, Grey Guard 7.0, * kho 7.3, Bivouac 7, Tahora 7, Whits Plum© 7, Move On 7, Reconnoitre Guv Guard 7. Square Deal, John AAilbc, Gonney. and Princess Montoa have all shoun tip proininonitlv in tfieir late enort.% but with tho exception ox John wah He the other three will probably find, the trip too lengthy. Slyrax is mors, at homo over this distance and may bo the public fancy, while Body Ll„_..i is also likely to have plenty ol admirers.
