Lieht, of Madgeburg, in his monthly circular, states that the production of’ beet sugar in Germany. Austria, Huunarv. France, Belgium and Holland, (. oni° September Ist to April 30th, the first eight months of the 1913-14 campaign shows a decrease of 549,000 tons, compared with the corresponding period of the previous campaign. Herr Licht’s estimate of the total European production for the current campaign is 8,221.000 tens, against 8.31U.C00 tons in 1912-13, a decrease of about 86,000 tons. SOUTHERN GRAIN AND PRODUCE. There is nothing fresh to report in connection with the wheat market, which is firm, but with little business doing.There is a development in the oat market which is hardly likely to have .my appreciable effect upon the local prices, but will relieve, to some extent, the stocks now held by merchants. Tins is the opening of the export trade to Hie West of England ports. Tho Westmeat li will take away some thousands of sacks, anil it is hoped to get away a larger quantity next month. Freight by tliis month's boat is 27s 6d per ton, aiul for the next month it will lx? 255. It is not considered that-there will be any profit at present prices in the export trade to the United Kingdom, but it will form an outlet for stocks. New Zealand oats are quoted at 2s 6d per bushel in London, so that, when all charges are paid, they will net considerably less than 2s per bushel. Canadian and Argentine oat® are quoted at much lower prices than New Zealand grown. The potato market is quiet, and buyers ore not inclined to do business at" .£3 per ton at country stations, the Auck land market being heavily supplied at the present time.
