THE GALE AT SEA
VESSELS BADLY BUFFETED
The southerly gale raged throughout yesterday, although owing to the easterly slant and diminished force of th© wind in the morning, two smaller steamers, the Arapawa and Huia, were able to leave Wellington for Wanganui. The Mapourika, after a passage of thirty hours from Westport, arrived at ten o’clock yesterday morning. She received a severe tossing about m Cook Strait on nearing port. The only other arrival yesterday was tho Kahu from Napier and East Coast stations. Tho vessel was able to work only two stations owing to tflo heavy weather.
The Kamo, which left Greymouth at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday for ’Wellington, rounded Stephen Island at 7 o’clock on Sunday night, but did not put in an appearance here yesterday. She is evidently sheltering across the Strait. The Whangape- which left Westport at 3.40 p.m. on Sunday, is also apparently sheltering. The Kennedy, bound from Tarakohe to Wellington, was sheltering at French Pass yesterday. Tho Aorerefi hound from Paten to Wellington, was still in Titahi Bay yesterday. Captain Fisk landed yesterday to procure meat and other provisions. On Sunday the Warrimoo, en route from Auckland, was unable to land at Gisborne on account of- tho heavy south-easterly. The vessel arrived off the Napier breakwater at 3 p.m. yesterday, but tho weather was coo thick, and owing to tho.galo sho was in able to berth. Tho Rarawa was harboured at Onehunga yesterday, but -a expected to cross tho Manukau oar this morning for Now Plymouth. The vessel will leave the New Plymouth breakwater to-morrow evening on arrival of tho express for Onehunga,
