WELLINGTON PROVINCE
RAILWAYS, ROADS, AND LAND DEVELOPMENT. CONFERENCE TO BE -HELD. Some time age the Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce decided:— “That all chambers of commerce and local bodies within tho Wellington province be communicated with conveying the suggestion that a conference of delegates bo held at Wellington to consider tho following important questions affecting the vital interests Of the trade and commerce of Wellington; (1) Railways, deviations, and branch lines; (2) opening of East Coast lands; (3) improvement of i main roads, in particular the improvement of Paekakariki and Rimutaka inclines and Ngahaurango gorge for motor traffic.” Following upon this, all chambers of commerce and local bodies in the province were circularised, and they were also requested to nominate, delegates to the proposed conference. The idea has been taken up with enthusiasm, and replies approving of the conference havo been received from all ovei tho province. A largo number of delegates havo also been appointed. At yesterday’s meeting of the Central Chamber the question of tho date of tho conference was considered.
Mr C. M. Luke (president) suggested that the date should bo fixed as near as possible to the opening of Parliamont.
Mr J. W. Brodio endorsed tho suggestion. Mr J. F. Atkins moved that the date bo fixed as th© first Vjcdnesday in July. Mr Leigh Hunt said that a month should ho allowed after remits had been received from the country before the conference was held. He thought that the country local bodies should be given a fortnight in which tn send remits, aud a month to consider the order paper when it was made up. Mr Atkins altered his motion to read that the conference be held within three days of the first Wednesday in July, tho date to be fixed by the president and secretary. This was agreed to and it was also resolved that remits bo invited from all local bodies in the province. Tho following delegates have been appointed already:—Chambers of Commerce: Mastertou, the president, Mr C. E. Daniel; Palmerston North, th© president, Mr F. J. Nathan. Wellington City Council, the Mayor (Mr J. P. Luko and Councillor Barber. Borough Councils: Petone, the Mayor, Mr McEwan and Councillor Findlay; Miramar, tho Mayor, Mr F. Townsend, and Councillor S. H. Underwood; Masterton, tho Mayor, Mr. J. M. Coradine; Lower Hutt, the Mayor and Councillors Kompthorno and Hodgins; Karori. tho I favor, Mr W. T. Hidreth; Foxton, tho Mayor; Eastbourne, Councillor Harcourt. County South Wairarapa, Councilor W. Perry; Mauriceville, Councillor C. Churchill Jackson, Masterterton, Councillor W. J. Welch; Featherston, th© chairman, Mr A. D. McLeod ; Ekotahnna, Councillor P. Dawson ; Tinui, Councillor J. Lennie: Horowhenua, Councillor H. J. Rickards. Town Boards: Upper Hutt, Mr T. M. Wilford Martinborough, Mi John Martin; Johnsonvillc, the chairman, Mr F- T. Moore .and jjlr O. Jerusalem; Featherston, the chairman, Mr J. W. Card, and Mr Coleman Phillips.
