WANGANUI TRACK NOTES

Special to the ‘•Times.” WANGANUI, May 16. The weather during the last few days has been very wet, a lot of rain having fallen, but there is every prospect of an improvement now and racing enthusiasts, especially the trainers, a.re hopeful that the next few days will bo fine. Considering tho heavy rains the tracks aro in excellent condition, and most of the horses here have been getting in some solid work. The arrivals yesterday included Bertrada, Goldsizo and Ivurenica. The latter, which went lame in the off-foreleg some time ago, now appears to be quite sound again, and put in a couple of solid rounds this morning. Cornelian and Bercola were out early and put in a mile and a half at threequarter pace; both horses are looking very well, especially Cornelian, but Bercola will probably bo all the better after a race or two. Spalfish moved very freely this morning, and his chance in the Borough Handicap is fancied in some quarters. Bertrada is very fit, and shaped pleasingly this morning when she went a round at half-pace and then galloped a mile in Imin 50sec. Square Deal, Northern, Goldsize, Riro Atu, Aniake, Sportsman, Silver Monarch,, Formby, New York, Kurapai, St. Gate, Lady Elgiya and a number of others did useful work. Bercola (E. Copestake) and Silver Monarch (N. Campbell) went twice round over the big fences yesterday, both jumping well, though Bercola did not display the same dash that he showed last year. Cornelian and Aruake had a good set-to over the schooling hurdles; tho pair kept together and jumped well until tho last hurdle was reached, when Aruake hit hard, smashing the toil batten, but ho did not hurt himself. Since Kauroa is expected to be the stable elect for the big steeples on Thursday he is now much fancied. He is reported to have come on well since competing in tho hurdles at Awapuni. Jackman, who has done a lot of hunting, and proved himself a splendid fencer, is expected to run a big race, while Riro Atu is doing good work, and his party are said to like his chance. He is to go to Auckland after competing here. It is understood that Gondolier will compete in the Hack Steeplechase arid not the big event. Gladiolo has thrown off her lameness and is galloping in something like her old style. With but 7.10 in the Borough Handicap she must take a lot of beating if she keeps sound. Master Lupin heat Grey Guard over six furlongs. New York proved too good for Formby, Sweet Breeze and White Plume over half a mile. SCRATCHED, Press Association. ■ i WANGANUI, May 16. Aratiatia has been scratched "for all engagements at Wanganui.
