THE RAILWAY DISASTER
EXTRAORDINARY ESCAPES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrlgbi SYDNEY, March 16. Extraordinary escapes characterised the railway disaster. One man and his wife escaped with slight shock, while Mr Minnie’s wife, sitting on the opposite seat, was killed. Another passenger sitting still, had two dead bodies thrust upon him. Several children in the fatal carriages were thrown into the corners and on to the racks. They were lifted out little the worse for their startling experiences. ,So completely were the four compartments wrecked that it is marvellous that any of the passengers escaped.

NELSON, March 16. The Right Hon. W. F. Massey, Prime Minister, sent the following cable to the Premier of New South Wales regarding the railway disaster: —“On behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand I desire to express Our deep regret at the railway calamity which has Occurred in your State, and also to offer our Sincere sympathy tihto the bereaved relatives and friends of the sufferers.—W. F. Massey.”-
