SOCIALIST DEMONSTRATION
AS COUNTERBLAST. TO PEASANTS’ PATRIOTIC PETITION. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright STOCKHOLM, February 9. As a counterblast to the patriotic demonstratioh by peasants, thirty thousand Socialists demonstrated in front of the Government offices, demanding a diminution in armaments.
The Premier replied that Swedes would be compelled to make great sacrifices for the defence of the country.
[Recent cable messages stated that over thirty thousand peasants from all parts of the country marched in procession to the Royal Castle, and petitioned King Gustav in favour of an immediate increase in the national armament, declaring the peasantry’s readiness to make all necessary sacrifices. Tho King, in replying to the deputatioh, said he was determined to insist on an early settlement to the defence question. The fleet, he added, should be increased. There were scenes of great enthusiasm.]
