A schoolmaster in an island village adjacent .to the Sakura-jima volcano refused to dopant to the rescue steamer with the other readdmte. He preferred to guard the Emperor’s picture in the schoolhouse. He was forcibly removed with the picture, amid a rain of red-hot stones and ashes.
