LOWER HUTT BOROUGH
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council "’as held •ast evening. There wore present" The Mayor (Mr E. P. Bunny)' and Councillors Hobbs, Parsonage, Clenv don, Kempthoruo, Moldrum, Hodgins, and Dawson.
Mr 0. Treret-hick applied for a re* duotion in the price of gas for power purpose® from 7s to 6s per thousand cubic feet. It was pointed out that the price of gas for power was 5s per thousand in Wellington and 5s XOd in Potone.—Councillors were of the opinion that the price should be reduced all round, and on the motion, of Councillor Olendon it was decided to consider the question when the estimate® for the year are before the council. Councillors A. J. Hobbs and A. E. Roots, who represent the borough on -he Petone Technical School Board, were re-appointed.
The sisters of Notre Dame des Misns, who have acquired the property and residence of the late Mr E. J. Riddiford, applied for a remission of rates, as the residence was being used as a school. It was stated that the convent was entitled to a remission of rates to the extent of four acres. —The request was granted, which will mean a loss to the borough of £2O in notes. The borough engineer (Mr W. J. Roche) reported that the last nineteen chains of removal work had been done
a tho main road, together with eighteen chains in Knight’s rood. Tarring and sanding had been undertaken at a total cost to date of £350. Tho linking up with the gas main had been completed to Cornwall street. A house-to-house inspection was hedng made in the borough by an officer of the council, who had been instructed to pay special attention to the cleanliness of backyards.
