CHRISTMAS MATCHES

WEDNESDAY v. SATURDAY ASSOCIATION. FORMER MAKE GOOD START. In consequence of the Auckland cricket representatives not visiting Wellington this Christinas as previously intended, a match was arranged between teams selected by the Wednesday and Saturday associations. This was commenced at the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon. Tho weather was beautifully fine, but tho attendance was not very large. The wicket was in good order, though tho outfield was somewhat dead, and some really good cricket was witnessed. At tho close of tho day’s play tho Wednesday Association had mado 235 in tneir venture, while tho Saturday representatives had lost ono wickot foi 22. Kinvig and Gourlay opened tho batting for the Wednesday team, aud though r'ons came slowly at first Kinvig brightened up tho play by some roallv tine cuts to tho boundary.’ Gourlay, on the other hand, did not seem at home, especially to the bowling of Mclntosh, and when the score reached 32 ho endeavoured to sneak a run, but Grace, at mid-on, snapped up tho ball and dislodged the bails. Of tho total tho retiring batsman had only contributed 2, while Kinvig had mado 22. McGirr filled tno vacancy, and ho assisted Kinvig to raise the scoro to 4-1, when tho 1 jitter gently lifted ono to Ryan at point. Ho gave a really good display in compiling Ins* 25, and his score included several boundaries. Warno then joined McGirr, and a fine stand was mado, the total being raised to 108 when tho former was given out Lb.w to Saunders. George followed, and at 134 McGirr was clean bowled by fliddlestono, who cent down a splendid hall. McGirr contributed 50, and ho played fmo cricket after ho got settled down. Goorgo was also bowled by the next ball delivered by Saunders, and McMahon, who replaced him, was dismissed in a like manner. It looked as though a rot was sot--'ting in, but Taylor and Bowles became associated and runs came jfreoly, the hoard showing 185 before tho partnorship was dissolved by Graco cleanbowling Taylor. Houlihan and Bowles then took tho total to 231, when tho former was stumped .by Wagstaffo. The remaining wickets only added another four runs, Bowles carrying his bat for 43, which ho made by clean, bright cricket. Altogether tho Wednesday representatives gavo a good exhibition and fully maintained the reputation thoy mado against Trott’s team last season.

Hay and Baker opened the Saturday representatives’ innings, hut play had not been in progress long when Baker was bowled by McGirr for 2. Hay and Ryan were not out, and tho score stood at 23 for one wicket when stumps were drawn for the day. Scores
