HOROWHENUA NOTES

From Our Own Correspondent. OTAKI, Tuesday. Advantage is being taken of the fine weather to shear, and consequently there is a great demand for shearers throughout the district. The bulk of the wool, however, has not yet been clipped. Messrs Abraham and Williams intend to hold regular pig sales in Levin, the step hejng in response to a wellsigned petition from local farmers. At the Levin Fire Brigade’s meeting last night Captain McTaggart, who has been a member of the organisation for the past eleven years, was presented with a two-years’ service bar to add to those previously won by him. Fireman Hensman was presented witn a three-years’ service certificate, it is probable that h team will be sent to the Hastings competitions. Mies Kilmartin, who acted as relieving teacher at the Otaki State School for some time, remained at Otaki holiday making after the expiry of her term. She left on Saturday for Weflington, and will shortly go on to Sydney. It is possible that she will not return to New Zealand. Mr Oowie, an ex-teacher of the Foxton State School, has successfully passed his final solicitors’ examination. Mr and Mrs E. Groig have again taken up residence at Fox ton, after an enjoyable tour of the Ola Country. The Government plantation between Motuiti and Himatangi bears evidence of the recant gale. Trees have been uprooted and limbs torn off, and in one place a track has been cut right through.
